Exodus 3:14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”

That is the answer. What was the question?

Exodus 3:13 Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?”

Abraham did not have a name upon which he could call upon God to answer him. Every name given to God basically begins with El and is followed by a characteristic or action by which they saw God in action. El meaning God. Example for this is El Shaddai (אֵל שַׁדַּי) is most commonly translated in traditional English Bibles as “God Almighty.” 

Another way of looking at this is to say “I am the God who answers to no one.”

Abram did not cry out to God, God spoke to Abram. God always calls out to man.

Even in the Lord’s prayer Jesus said to pray “To He who created us” in Our Father in heaven, hallowed by thy name. His name is hallowed, hidden from us so that man cannot call on Him who answers to no one.

God is the initiator of all things, the author of life itself.
