Romans 9:20 But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?”

Sometimes I have to search the scriptures to find the passage that addresses my question.

Who are you?

So many of us find our identity in labels. I often hear labels identifying what we do rather than who we are, doctor, lawyer, indian chief. You get the drift.

But who are you in your inner being?

Proverbs 20:27 The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all his innermost parts.

Proverbs 20:30 Blows that wound cleanse away evil; strokes make clean the innermost parts.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

When we read the Word and consider these verses, does that change our answer?

Romans 9:11 though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls—

In short, it is not what you do that makes you who you are, but God who calls you.
