What Faith

Ephesians 2:8

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

Romans 10:17

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Romans 16:26

but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith—

Hebrews 11:1

By Faith

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Deuteronomy 32:20

And He said: ‘I will hide My face from them, I will see what their end shall be; for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith.

Deuteronomy 32:20 is included in this list to remind us of a past in which God was faithful to hear the cries of His people and save them out of Egypt but hid His face from them because they did not trust Him. They saw the power of God first hand and yet that was not enough to cause them to trust God. The Hebrew word in that verse for faith is ‘ēmûn and is connected to issues of trust.

There are 23 dictionaries listed at BLB.ORG that have a variety of things to say about faith, its meaning, its use, its function, its power but none of those come close to the reality of placing our faith in Christ.

1 Corinthians 2:5

so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

Faith does not rest in the wisdom of mankind. It rests only after God has used it.

God is not finished using our faith to serve His will.

Final Save

1 Corinthians 15:52

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

Being human we go through time and in the process we undergo changes, some of them physical and some of them mental, Some of the changes we make are decisions on our part, while others are divine intervention. When we review the past, especially at an older age, memories of emotional moments are blurred by the physical degradation of the body. We may find our memories are not as clear or accurate as we would like.

My knowledge of God’s Word, my relationship with God, and what God has done for me is a spiritual journey and as such my failing memory cannot be trusted.

Ephesians 1:4

even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love

We were chosen long before we were ever born. In God’s will we were always His. We aere destined for a life with Him that we have not yet discovered because sin is still present. When we are changed in that final delivery into the eternal realm, sin will be absent from our lives.

I look forward to that with the same faith that pulls me forward without knowing what tomorrow brings until God speaks. We live this life of faith because we are on a journey to our final destination and each step is one of uncertainty because we trust God.

My final question in all this is rhetorical in nature.

When we are delivered and we see Him face to face, what happens to faith?
