Job 40:8 New American Bible (Revised Edition) (NABRE) Would you refuse to acknowledge my right? Would you condemn me that you may be justified?

Rarely do I read the NABRE but as I was looking into the issues of being challenged on issues of importance to me, salvation, justification, righteousness and the like, I found this. My standard study version, the KJV, uses the term disannul, some others annul. That word is brought into play as a thing never done, never said, never written. An annulment means it never happened.

This version goes one step further declaring God did not have the right or authority to do what He did. This kind of thinking creeps into the minds of those who blame God for every bad thing that happens in the world. “How could a god allow this to happen?”

Is it possible that those words are uttered by people who refuse to acknowledge that there is a God and use events to justify their unbelief? Perhaps their thoughts are more in line with “this is all there is to life” and there is nothing more. Having nothing to look forward to with any hope causes them to be negative, sullen, and judgmental. A life without hope tries to steal every moment of pleasure without any regard for a future. It justifies selfishness.

What do you think?

  1. As a believer I am guilty at times of saying why has God allowed this. 9/11 was an example. But as time went by I processed it. Maybe it has to do with where you are in your sanctification process. I’ve never thought that hopelessness justifies selfishness but that is so true.
