Beethoven’s Fifth

Psalm 62:1 English Standard Version

My Soul Waits for God Alone

To the choirmaster: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

1 For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.

We know what Beethoven’s Fifth means. But what did “according to Jeduthun” mean?

Beethoven wrote nine symphonies, 32 piano sonatas, 16 string quartets, an opera, and choral music, as well as many other works for soloists and orchestra, solo instruments, and chamber ensembles and yet when we say his fifth, we automatically know it is a symphony because that is how it is so often referred.

“According to Jeduthun” had a relevant meaning to the people performing Psalm 62 even more so than to those who were listening. That means nothing to me today but the instruction is found in our bible.

What does it mean to you to hear “according to Martin Luther”? History tells us because we studied that history. We do not all study the same histories. That name means nothing to some people. The same could be said for “according to Karl Marx” or “according to Plato”, because they were not in our studies.

The same is true of my most famous study “according to the Word”.

Who teaches “the Word”?

Once again, some have no idea who I am talking about.
