Journal

Psalm 77:5-6 I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times. I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.

I am sixty-nine years old and I have been writing for a very long time. I have only been posting devotionals since January of 2014. Everything else I have written are in journals. You might even call them ancient manuscripts.

I did not journal in my days of sin. I was too busy sinning. I saw no point to it then. Who in their right mind wants evidence of evil following them around? I was encouraged to journal from a sermon by a layperson. He put the thought in my head and it stuck.

Israel would stack twelve rocks, one for each tribe, at the site of powerful movements of God. This marked their journey with God. What is a journal if not a record of your journey with God? If you are faithful to keep a journal it can be helpful to check spiritual growth.

Would it surprise you to know that I have never used a journal item to write a devotional? It isn’t because they are not worthy or uninspired, it is because those writings are about me. These devotionals are about what the Lord wants and not so much about me. I do find time to go back over some of my ancient writings and I sometimes discover something encouraging for myself.

“Wow, did I write that?”

Yes and no. Even in those ancient days I heard the Lord and made a record of those encounters and know with mature certainty that the Lord was with me even when I was a babe in Christ. I didn’t realize it then but I can see it know. The Holy Spirit was very much involved and responsible for my growth in Christ.

And He still is.

Why Grace

Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

Why do we need grace? Perhaps it is because we are more forgetful than faithful. This is in part because we are more active than fruitful. Busy times, busy people, so much to do that we cannot seem to remember everything.

Daniel 12:4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

Let it be known that this increase of knowledge, which is too much for us to hold and heed within our ability as mere humans might just be a sign of the times. This running to and fro, looks like a hurried thing, unproductive and man always trying to catch up.

Are you trying to keep up with everything and in that are you keeping hold of those things you have heard of the Lord, or are they slipping away?

There seems to be two types of people in all those extinction level event movies and the perception of that might be true. There are those who take and those who give. The takers burn, loot and kill. The givers comfort the frightened and extend grace until nothing is left to be done.

What is missing in both types is the use of knowledge. In the end it is useless.

Revelation 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

Knowledge will be of no use to you then but grace shall still abound.
