Trusting God

Psalm 18:30 (ESV)

    This God—his way is perfect;
    the word of the Lord proves true;
    he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.

Psalm 139:23-24 (ESV)

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart!
    Try me and know my thoughts!
24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,
    and lead me in the way everlasting!

Ephesians 3:17-19 (ESV)

17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Do you believe the first quoted passage? If the answer is yes, then you must believe the second and third also. There is so much wisdom and truth in the bible that it takes a lifetime of faithful dedication to read and understand it all. That would consume your time to the point you would have no time left to serve God as you are called to do.

We do not have to understand everything in order to obey God. The formula for obedience of faith was mirrored by Abram, before he became Abraham. Hear, believe, obey and observe the results. Abram had no understanding of where he would go, what he would encounter, only that he believed he heard God and understood the simplest of instructions. Go.

Abram did not leave immediately. He stayed in Haran until his father died. Haran means a dry place and if you take meanings from names, you might accept that God waited for Abram to move before relieving him of the dryness. If you do not, that is also good with God. Just because one person sees a thing does not mean God is speaking the same thing to you.

You are not less in God’s eyes just because of it.

Spiritual Fruit

Jeremiah 17:8 English Standard Version (ESV)

He is like a tree planted by water,
    that sends out its roots by the stream,
and does not fear when heat comes,
    for its leaves remain green,
and is not anxious in the year of drought,
    for it does not cease to bear fruit.

I begin with this passage to demonstrate how a man who has spiritual fruit reacts to adverse conditions.

Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

These are the fruits of the spirit, fruit produced by the spirit. Which of these attributes cannot be reproduced by self-effort? Good men with good intentions will produce these fruits in the flesh. They will mask self-righteousness in false humility.

An old teaching comes to mind that says a tree produces fruit by nature not by effort.

Matthew 7:20 (ESV) Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

This is not an encouragement to become fruit inspectors. We are not to judge others nor ourselves in these matters. If your roots extend into the steam and the Holy Spirit brings life to you, you need not worry about what fruit is being produced. If you are not rooted and grounded no amount of effort will produce fruit during a drought.

Matthew 6:27 (KJV) Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

Once cubit is equal to one step indicating both length of life and forward progress. Our human insecurities seek reassurance in signs and wonders. What can I measure to ensure I am making forward progress? That is a worldly attitude and not a kingdom attribute. If we trust God we will not worry about those things which are not within our control. Fruits of the spirit are produced by the spirit and not within our control. Trust God to finish what He has begun. Be not anxious.
